How to Grow Your Own Herb Garden in Your Condo Unit

A garden is a man’s own masterpiece. It showcases a person’s so-called green thumb, and not everyone is blessed to grow as many plants as possible in their backyards. In your condo unit, however, you don’t need a vast space to grow your own herb garden. You can do that right in the comfort of your own space.

The first thing that you should do is to read up on herbs and other plants that you want to grow in your garden. Research the kinds of herbs that can survive indoors. Basil, rosemary, sage, parsley, and thyme are some examples of herbs that can live in indoor settings. Determine which herbs need more sunlight (hence, you need a plant box for them on your balcony), or which ones need more water.

Next, buy the plants from the plant store. Don’t buy plants from the grocery store because they won’t grow. When you purchase plants, you may either have them replanted into a pot or they may be planted in cactus soil or in a potting mix. Moreover, ask as many questions as possible prior to leaving the plant store. Ask about taking care of the plants. Things that you have to prepare for are the following: the amount of sunlight and water needed for the herbs, the soil where they can be planted, drainage, and other nutrients that are necessary for the herbs to grow quickly and healthy.

Even if you are living in a limited space, you can still provide enough light for the herbs. Six hours of natural light or 14 hours under artificial light will do. You can also create incubation for the herb garden by installing a small light bulb above the pots or the containers.

Look around your house and decide where you would put your herb garden. The best locations, however, are in the bathroom and in the kitchen. Since it is warm and humid in these areas, the herbs will not dry out. In cases where they don’t get enough sunlight, install a southern facing window so that the herbs can get the sunlight they need. Likewise, check the drainage of the pots, lest you want your herbs to drown.

To make a one-pot indoor herb garden, choose a big pot. There should be at least a small hole at the bottom of the pot to drain the water. Keep a ceramic tray as well so that drainage won’t get messy in your condo unit.

Once you have bought the herbs, fill the pot with soil, but maintain a three-inch allowance near the rim. Lightly moisten the soil until it becomes loose. Dig a small hole afterwards and put the herbs in place. Sprinkle them with water. Lastly, put the pot on the ceramic tray. Put it where it could get enough sunlight, and water it when needed.

Keeping your own herb garden in your Taguig condo unit is easy. Just remember to trim the plants, especially the creepers. When you see that they have thrived, start using these herbs in your cooking. This way, you also prevent the herbs from overcrowding.
