The Fort Today
The Fort is notable for its prolific educational institutions as it is home to world recognized international schools such as the British School Manila, Manila Japanese School, Korean International School Philippines, and International School Manila to name a few. Apart from the fact that Bonifacio Global City is fundamentally designed to be pedestrian-friendly, it is also a recognized district of high-tech offices, high-end retail outlets, and high class residences.
A History of The Fort
The Fort was once claimed by the Americans during the time of the country’s emancipation from the Crown of Spain. The district is located in a disputed area between the cities of Makati, Taguig, and Pateros, and continues to be disputed by the three financial districts. BGC is currently under the de facto administration of Taguig, another flourishing financial district in Manila. The American Colonial Period saw the acquisition of the disputed land purely for strategic purposes. It was then named Fort William McKinley, after the 25th president of the United States.
The Fort was a significant location to the military branch of the United States. It was during their occupation of the country, on August 13, 1916, that the 31st Infantry Regiment of the United States Army, dubbed the Polar Bears, was formed. The unit is rare in that it was first formed in non-American soil and have spent most of its life outside American soil. The unit continues to be operational until today.
Fort Bonifacio, then called Fort McKinley, was strategically used as an American military base. It was turned over to the government of the Philippines in 1949 by virtue of US Embassy Note No. 0570. Fort Bonifacio was renamed after the Father of the Philippine Revolution Andres Bonifacio in 1957 when it was declared the official headquarters of the Philippine Army.
Through the Bases Conversion and Development Authority, Fort Bonifacio was transformed into a mixed-use urbanized development. Mandated through RA 7227, the Bases Conversion and Development Authority is a government owned and controlled corporation that is instrumental in transforming former US military bases into alternative productive civilian use.
Bonifacio Global City is not only a financial district that boasts of discipline and organization, it is also the national headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Southern Police District, as well as the marine base of the Philippine Navy and the Philippine Marine Corps. Fort Bonifacio is not only a safe place to search for BGC condo for sale, its flourishing financial and educational institutions are ideal environments in raising a family. In truth, the Fort has gone through a lengthy history since the Philippine Revolution. From being central to the military history of the United States, to being central to Manila’s urbanized development, the Fort has been shaped into one of the most influential and significant financial districts the country has to offer.
